New EU Tool to Monitor Non-EU Imports

The European Union (EU) strengthens the monitoring of imports to protect its market from goods originating in non-member countries.

International Trade in Transformation

In recent years, international trade has been marked by growing instability. Geopolitical tensions, trade disputes and changes in tariff policies among major economies have disrupted the usual flow of goods, forcing products that once had established routes to seek new destinations.

In this scenario, the European Commission has launched a new customs monitoring tool aimed at protecting the EU from sudden and potentially harmful increases in imports from non-member countries.

The measure seeks to prevent harmful trade diversion, a situation that arises when goods blocked from entering other markets—due to high tariffs or other restrictions—are redirected to the EU, distorting competition and putting the stability of key productive sectors at risk.

The EU Monitoring Tool

How does this monitoring tool work? Based on real-time customs data, the system makes it possible to detect significant increases in imports and act quickly.

The information gathered by the tool will be public and updated periodically, giving manufacturers, industry associations and Member States the ability to analyze trends and provide additional data on the economic and market situation. This shared vision will be key to identifying specific products at risk and taking measures before the impact becomes greater.

The initiative is part of Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s proposal to create a dedicated task force for import monitoring. This team will be responsible for providing accurate and timely information to support decision-making, as well as maintaining active contact with relevant trade partners.
